What Will the New NPS Wilderness Climbing Policy Really Mean for Climbing & Bolting?

Back in May, we announced that the National Park Service had finally issued its official policy—Director’s Order #41—on fixed anchor use in Wilderness. The order ensures that there will be no permanent ban on fixed anchors in NPS managed Wilderness, which brought relief to many concerned climbers across the country. But there are some changes and new requirements, including prior authorizations, that climbers should be aware of.
