We've had recent reports of climbers arrested for attempting to climb at Williamson Rock outside of Los Angeles, CA. We'd like to remind the climbing community that Williamson Rock remains closed to protect the endangered habitat of the Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog.
The Access Fund has been working for nearly ten years to advocate the reopening of Williamson Rock to climbing, coordinating with the Friends of Williamson Rock and the Allied Climbers of San Diego (ACSD) to find a balanced solution that allows climbing access while also protecting the Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog.
Access Fund hired an environmental consultant to plan an alternate low-impact trail, and the Forest Service recently issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement that will consider management alternatives for the area. Access Fund and ACSD submitted comments on this Notice of Intent to advocate for solutions that allow climbing access while accepting well-substantiated restrictions. We are also lobbying the region's Congressional delegation to urge the US Forest Service to implement an appropriate plan for the area that includes climbing.
Please respect the closure at Williamson Rock while we work to get this area reopened. For more information email [email protected].
